Today marks the beginning of my third trimester. Only 3 months until our house holds not one, but two little ones. As that due date draws ever nearer, we have been slowly beginning to prepare for the coming changes. One of the transitions that we attempted this week was to move Emma Grace from her crib to a big girl bed.
Now, when I say big girl bed, I really just mean "mattress on the floor." Emma Grace is quite mobile in her sleep, and any bed higher than a few inches off the ground made me nervous. She has had a daybed in her room since she was born, and luckily that daybed came with a trundle bed underneath. It has always been my plan to use that for her first real "bed."
I wanted to make the bed transition in January so that Emma Grace would have a few months to get used to it. I don't want her to associate her little sister with too many unpleasant changes, so this was one thing we could go on and implement ahead of time. I ordered her some cute owl bedding from Target.com soon after Christmas, and it arrived this week. On Tuesday, I washed the new sheets, pulled out the trundle, and got the mattress ready for its new little occupant.
Now, Tuesday was kind of an off day for Emma Grace. She had gone to bed late the night before and slept late that morning. That pushed her naptime back until 4 p.m., during which she slept 3 hours. Normally her bedtime is at 7:30 p.m. We probably would have been wiser to wait until a more regular day to try out the new bed, but once she saw it, there was no putting it up.
She was super excited about this new thing to explore. She dove on it, rolled on it, and played with Daddy on it for awhile. She even seemed to know what it was for. At one point she laid down on with her blankets and said, "Night, night."
Around 8:15 p.m., we started our bedtime routine. She brushed her teeth, we sat on the bed and read a book, said our prayers, and then I tucked her in and went to turn out the lights.
The sweet position above lasted about half a second after I closed the door. I heard a roll, a crash, and a cry, so I went back in. She had rolled off the bed and into the crib trying to get to the door. I kept the lights off and let her sit in my lap while I rocked her on the bed. She eventually got drowsy and let me lay her down and leave the room.
All was peaceful...for about 10 minutes. Then I started to hear noises on the monitor. Crinkles, shuffles, thumps, bumps, and more. I spent the next hour going back and forth in her room, seeing what she had gotten into and replacing her in the bed. Being a bit shortsighted, I had left a ton of stuff on the top of her daybed, forgetting she could now reach that once forbidden place. First trip, I cleaned everything off the daybed and put it in the crib. Second trip, I took the things out of the crib that she was trying to pull through the bars. Third trip, I moved the monitor that she could now reach when on the bed.
Finally, she must have worn herself out. At 9:30 p.m. I went in and found her sitting on the daybed. I said, "It's time to go night night." (thinking I was about to admit defeat and contain her in the crib). She slid off the bed, grabbed her blankets, and immediately got into her sleeping position on the mattress. I said good night, left the room, and waited for the inevitable sound of the mini tornado at work. But it never came. When we checked on her later, she was asleep on the little bed. Success!
But the silliness of Emma Grace did not end with her falling asleep. I woke up around midnight and went to check on her. She had somehow moved off the bed and onto the tiny strip of floor between the crib and the mattress without waking herself up. I didn't want to disturb her, so I left her there.
Around 1:30 a.m., I heard a cry on the monitor and went back to check on her. She was still sleeping, but now had her head wedged between the crib leg and the changing table--still asleep. This time I picked her up and placed her back on the bed, where she stayed until the next morning.
I considered this a mild success, but still had reservations about how bedtime was going to go. But after night #2, I can say with some measure of confidence that I think the transition is going to be a successful one.
Wednesdays are always long for our family because of church. On this particular Wednesday, Emma Grace slept late again (due to the 9:30 p.m. bedtime of the night before) and had no nap. By the time we got home from church, she was worn out. I wasn't sure how bedtime would go, but we pulled out the mattress and did our little routine just like the night before. When I left the room, she was sitting up on the mattress watching me go. I anticipated another marathon event like Tuesday, but I was pleasantly surprised. She never made a peep on the monitor, and I am assuming she fell over asleep from where she was sitting because that is exactly where we found her before we went to bed. She slept the whole night through without a sound.
So far, the new bed seems to be working out well. Actually, I guess I should say the new sleeping arrangement, because she has yet to stay the whole night in the bed. This morning when we checked on her, she was again on the floor--this time right next to the door. So we'll have to work on the "staying in the bed" concept, but on the whole I'd say this transition is a success!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Christmastime is the most wonderful time of the year, in my opinion. Sure, there's lots of over-commercialization and materialism, not to mention busyness, but somehow none of that bothers me so much. To me, Christmas (or just the month of December) will always be about family, spending time together, planning fun events and surprises for loved ones, and things of that nature. That being said, here is the recap of our very full and very wonderful December.
We put up Christmas lights on our house for the first time this year! We've had the lights for over a year; just never got around to putting them up before. But we finally did it this year! It was a family affair that evening, with Jacob, Emma Grace, Jacob's brother Jeremy, my sister Kelley, and even a quick visit from my Mom.
Emma Grace discovered the box of light clips and made herself useful by passing them to Daddy, telling him "Thank you" with each one. She really enjoyed being involved in the process.
Once the Christmas lights were up, the rest of the Christmas decorations followed quickly. Also for the first time this year, we set out Emma Grace's Fisher Price Nativity Set. I tried to teach her the story of Jesus' birth with it, but she more liked carrying the people around to different places in the house.
After our Santa visit, Emma Grace ran around Bass Pro like a red blur. I think the workers were charmed by her smile and Christmasy outfit, but Mom and Dad were worn out!
We also went to Zoo Lights in mid-December with the Smith family. It was cold, but very worth it! The lights were nice and the little ones enjoyed the North Pole Express Train and the reindeer.
Jacob got to working pretty long hours at this point, so it was hard to do a lot of family Christmas activities. But we did manage to drive around and look at Christmas lights one night. We found the house in Bartlett that won first place for Christmas lights and spent awhile there listening to songs and watching the lights. Emma Grace, however, was much more impressed by the neighbors' inflatable polar bears. She kept saying "Beah! Beah!" and even told them "Bye" when we left.
Our annual Cookie Party was the Saturday before Christmas. We had a ton of wonderful goodies and enjoyed a lot of fun with friends.
On Sunday, December 23rd, Emma Grace and I went to the Family Christmas Service. She was possibly the most decked out kid there. She did pretty well for having to sit through an hour and a half service. Even though it was nice having her sit with me, I am definitely thankful for a weekly nursery class to take her to!
That night we did Christmas with Jacob's family. I was a poor photographer that night--totally forgot to get out my camera. Emma Grace didn't really understand the whole present thing that night. She let me open one present with her, but I had to chase her down each time we opened another one. She did get excited about her shopping cart from Grammy and Grandpa. It's possible she wore a rut in the hardwood floor as many times as she pushed it around.
The next day (Christmas Eve!) Jacob was finally off work and we spent the day with my family, Christmasing at my Mom's house first and later my aunt's house. Emma Grace started to get a little more into the present opening with each event. By that night, she even said, "Want some," when we finished opening.
That night, Santa visited our house. Emma Grace must have been a good girl this year.
Emma Grace was hesitant at first, but she got over it soon enough. The first thing she went after were Veggie Tales books.
Then she progressed to her kitchen, and we realized how hungry she was.
Then she found her snacks in her stocking and we had to take a breakfast break.
But as soon as she finished she was back into the presents!
The rest of the day was busy! We ate lunch with Jacob's extended family in Mississippi and played Dirty Santa. Then we headed back to Memphis and spent some time with my mom's family at my grandfather's house. We actually made it home at a decent time and went to sleep because we were all exhausted!
Although December isn't over yet, I wanted to go on and post this because I am off work and actually have time! We are still looking forward to my senior class reunion dinner tomorrow night and our friends' Bunko Bash for New Year's Eve. This has been a busy month, but a very special and wonderful one!

We went to visit Santa at Bass Pro. We were actually the first ones in line that day! Emma Grace wasn't super keen on letting Santa hold her, but she did like the "deer" that were behind him.

A Quick November Remember
We already posted about one big happening in November (our gender reveal party), but a few other noteworthy things also took place.
My Great Aunt Mildred passed away at the end of October, and her funeral was November 1. Family came from all over to say good-bye and celebrate her life.
Emma Grace and her cousins, who were completely unaware of the somber tone of the occasion, enjoyed playing outside the funeral home.
Peak season is here, and Jacob has been going in to work very early (6:30 a.m.!). So, naturally, he is quite tired when he gets home.
We started our Christmas shopping in November! A lot of it takes place at our favorite store, Target.
Emma Grace and I also did some Black Friday shopping (at a decent hour, NOT in the middle of the night). We got a few good deals, but I'm not sure it was worth the lines!
Two days before Thanksgiving, we had our 20-week (really, 19 weeks and 5 days, but who's counting...) doctor's appointment. We found out we are having another girl (yay!) and that she is looking healthy and measuring well. She was 12 oz. (a little bigger than average) and didn't stop moving the entire ultrasound.
Thanksgiving was a marathon event for our family. We had dinner with my mom's side of the family on Wednesday night. I made a ham to share, and it turned out really well! It was the best one I've ever made (out of 2, but you know...)
On Thursday (actual Thanksgiving Day), we lunched with Jacob's family at 2 and my dad's side of the family at 5. Needless to say, we were STUFFED! Emma Grace didn't eat much, but she enjoyed the company...and the iPhones.
After Thanksgiving, we put up our Christmas tree! I love our tree. It just makes me so happy.
We also attempted to have a Christmas card photo session with Emma Grace, but she was less than cooperative. We laughed a lot, though, and did manage to get a few cute pictures.

Not kidding, this was taken before 9 p.m. one night. |

It's A...
Our Gender Reveal Party was last week. We had a great time teasing our family and friends with a few games before letting them find out whether Baby Tucker is a boy or girl.
We planed to do our reveal with cupcakes, but that didn't go so well (a cupcake injector would have been a good investment for me). So instead we bought an outfit for the new baby, wrapped it, and then opened it in front of everyone.
It's another girl! Emma Grace is getting a little sister - Adelyn Claire.
